EP.04 / Brian Orter, BOLD on The Press

Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts, or on your favorite podcast platform.

The Press is a transformational 450,000 SF re-development of the old LA Times Printing Facility. In collaboration with the architects EYRC, BOLD brought this space back to life, celebrating its previous use.

I've always been fascinated by the transformative power of lighting in architecture. Lighting can change the mood and feel of a space, yet it's often an underappreciated element in design. Today, I'm joined by Brian Orter, a renowned lighting designer and the founder of Brian Orter Lighting Design (BOLD). Brian shares his passion for storytelling through lighting and his perspective on converting the historic Los Angeles Times printing press into a modern office space called The Press.

In our conversation, we explore Brian’s unique approach to lighting design that celebrates the history of the space while creating an atmosphere of discovery, personality, and emotion. Whether a project is an office, restaurant, or nightclub, Brian's "imperfect perfection" philosophy aims to evoke unexpected beauty with an environment that encourages memories and romance.

We also discuss Brian's unconventional introduction to the industry, leadership philosophy, team dynamics, and BOLD's bi-coastal presence in New York and Los Angeles. We touch on BOLD's origins and mission to nurture lighting design careers while fostering a respectful and collaborative studio environment.

About Brian Orter

Brian’s earliest works were theatrical projects in New York City where he started working as a teenager. After attending Purchase College for lighting design and later Parsons for photography. He found himself in a new creative era of New York City. At this time mega-clubs were forming, and theatricality was paramount to the experience. Brian’s designs were seen at Club USA in Times Square, the Tunnel and the legendary Limelight nightclub in Chelsea. Restaurateurs and Hoteliers began to seek a similar vibe for their spaces and collaborated with Brian to develop lighting concepts for their venues.

From this work, a global network of clients emerged, and Brian married his approach to theatrical lighting to the company’s ethos and approach to commercial work.

Today Brian and his team continue to explore the infinitely expanding boundaries of lighting design and technology while maintaining a strong footing in the traditional values inherent to design and story telling.

Brian is married and lives with two Brussels Griffons. He is an IFR rated pilot and president of Pilots to the Rescue a dog rescue.
